HAVANA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Cuba's electricity network was restored Sunday after a breakdown caused a general collapse and left the Caribbean island without power on Friday, said the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The Caribbean country's electrical system is already interconnected from the town of Mariel, about 45 km west of Havana, to Guantanamo in the far east of Cuba, said Lazaro Guerra, director of electricity at the ministry.

The official added that two provinces in the western region -- Artemisa and Pinar del Rio -- are still not connected to the national network.

The collapse of the electricity grid was caused by a breakdown in a substation in Havana.

In mid-October last year, a breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras power plant, Cuba's largest, left the island without electricity for four days.

The same facility suffered another breakdown that cut off electricity to all of Cuba in December 2024. Enditem
