ALMATY, March 17 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and two others were injured in an avalanche in the mountains near Almaty, local media reported on Monday.

The incident occurred at an altitude of 3,160 meters in the Talgar district, near Nunatak Lake, about one kilometer from the Shymbulak ski resort. The avalanche had a volume of approximately 50 cubic meters.

"Three freeriders (snowboarders riding off-piste) triggered the avalanche while skiing down the slope. All three were buried under the snow. Two managed to escape on their own, while the third person was found lifeless by Shymbulak rescue teams," the Emergency Situations Department of Almaty reported.

Later, it was confirmed that the deceased woman was a Russian citizen born in 1990. Enditem
