RIGA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The Latvian government on Tuesday approved the Interior Ministry's proposal to restrict pedestrian access at three crossing points along the Russian and Belarusian borders, allowing crossings only by motor vehicles.

According to the Interior Ministry, the partial closure of the Paternieki, Grebneva, and Terehova border crossings will take effect on March 19.

The government decree states that the measure is necessary due to the ongoing tense geopolitical situation related to the Ukraine crisis. The Interior Ministry emphasized the need to reinforce border surveillance systems and enhance control measures at these crossing points.

Authorities cited security risks posed by large gatherings of illegal migrants near the border, which have significantly impacted the ability to maintain an orderly crossing regime. Additionally, the concentration of people in these areas raised concerns about potential mass disturbances that could threaten Latvia's internal security. Enditem
