DHAKA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's longest "Jamuna Railway Bridge" officially opened to traffic Tuesday.

A special train crossed the newly built 4.8 km-long railway bridge, marking the opening of a new window for railway communication in the South Asian country.

Bangladesh Railways Director General Md Afzal Hossain told the opening ceremony that at least 88 trains will be able to cross the bridge at a higher speed without interruption.

This has opened a new window for the railway sector, he said.

According to the official, the bridge was built on 50 pillars and 49 spans with state-of-the-art steel technology confirming 100 years of durability.

Since the opening of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in 1998, some 38 trains used to cross daily at a relatively slow speed, connecting the central part of Bangladesh, including Dhaka with northern, northwestern, southern and southwestern regions.

Railway officials said the Bangladeshi government decided to construct the dedicated railway bridge in 2020, while its foundation stone was laid on Nov. 29 of the same year.

Despite having a parallel railway track, the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge was constructed mainly for road communication. Enditem
