MANILA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- About 11,000 people lost their lives in road crashes across the Philippines every year, Philippine Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said Wednesday.
"And the majority of those that died are young people between 15 to 29 years old," Herbosa said during the 2025 Philippine Road Safety Summit.
Citing a study by the Department of Health (DOH), Herbosa said that road crash deaths have increased by 25 percent yearly for the past 10 years.
"The majority, or 70 percent to 73 percent, of the fatalities are due to two-wheeler motor vehicles," said Herbosa, stressing the need to wear a helmet when on the bike.
Herbosa said authorities must strictly enforce local laws that mandate motorcycle riders to wear helmets while driving, especially those in the provinces.
The DOH is intensifying efforts to promote active transport, more protected bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and stricter enforcement of helmet use, Herbosa added. Enditem
