7 feared killed as boat capsizes in India's Madhya Pradesh

NEW DELHI, March 19 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people, including four children, are feared killed after a boat carrying them capsized in a dam in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

Eight people have managed to come out from the dam safely.

The boat carrying 15 people capsized Tuesday evening in MataTila Dam of Shivpuri district, about 281 km north of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

Police said the victims were heading to visit a temple on an island inside the dam.

"Last evening a boat carrying 15 people capsized in the backwaters of Matatila Dam. There is an ancient Siddh Baba temple on an island inside the dam and the local villagers were going there. In the boat capsize seven people -- three women and four children -- are missing," a senior police official in Shivpuri Aman Singh Rathore told media. "Eight people managed to come out of the dam safely."

According to Rathore, the rescuers from the State Disaster Response Force and local divers were carrying out searches inside the dam to trace the missing. Enditem
