BELGRADE, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The National Assembly of Serbia confirmed the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic on Wednesday, placing his government in a caretaker role until a new cabinet is formed.

Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic expressed gratitude to Vucevic for his "honorable and honest service" as prime minister, commending his "responsible and courageous conduct" during his tenure.

Vucevic announced his resignation on Jan. 28 during an extraordinary press conference at the government building in Belgrade, citing "elevated tensions" following the collapse at Novi Sad railway station in November, which claimed 15 lives.

With the resignation formally acknowledged, a 30-day period begins for the formation of a new government. If a new cabinet is not elected within this timeframe, Serbia will hold parliamentary elections. Enditem
