ISLAMABAD, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday launched a spring tree plantation drive for the year 2025 under the Green Pakistan Program to improve the country's environment quality.
During the drive, more than 41 million saplings will be planted across the four provinces of the country, which government officials said would be helpful in averting climate change impacts and addressing related diseases.
Addressing the launching ceremony, the prime minister said that the plantation campaign will significantly contribute to the betterment of the environment, adding that the impacts of climate change have also necessitated huge efforts for tree plantations in recent years.
Referring to the worst climate change-induced floods of 2022 which caused widespread destruction across the country, Sharif said that Pakistan was among the 10 countries in the danger zone considering the impacts of climate change.
"Pakistan is facing the impacts of climate change despite its minimal contributions to greenhouse gases... The nation should join hands and make efforts to counter climate change and environmental degradation for the country's progress," he added. Enditem
