PHNOM PENH, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Nepal have pledged to promote religious tourism potential between the two countries, said a news release from Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism on Wednesday.

The pledge was made between Cambodian Tourism Minister Huot Hak and visiting Nepalese Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Badri Pandey in Phnom Penh on Tuesday afternoon.

"The discussion focused on strengthening cooperation in tourism, particularly in promoting Buddhism tourism destinations and cultural heritage sites of Cambodia to Buddhist pilgrims and the people of Nepal," the news release said.

"Additionally, both sides explored the possibility of establishing direct flights between Phnom Penh and Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha," it added.

During the meeting, the two ministers also shared experience in the development of tourism products and human resources, the news release said.

"Furthermore, they considered the feasibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize tourism cooperation between Cambodia and Nepal," it said.

Cambodia attracted a total of 6,404 Nepalese visitors in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 118 percent, according to a Ministry of Tourism's report. Enditem
