LUSAKA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Wildlife authorities in Zambia have arrested three people for attempting to smuggle 33 protected wild birds through the country, according to a statement released Wednesday.

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife said the suspects, including two Zambians and one Tanzanian, were arrested in the northern district of Mbala.

The smuggled birds, including eagles, shoebills, raptors, and saddle-billed storks, were concealed in a vehicle's container without valid permits.

According to the statement, the suspects were intercepted on a highway and have since been charged with illegal possession of protected trophies, illegal possession of government trophies, and cruelty to animals.

"Illegal bird smuggling is uncommon in Zambia, and this case demonstrates that any occurrences are taken seriously," the statement said.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent an increase in such incidents, while the rescued birds have been placed under veterinary care and will undergo rehabilitation by experts, the statement added. Enditem
