ALGIERS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- A military fighter jet crashed on Wednesday near the town of Aoulef in the southern Algerian province of Adrar, resulting in the death of its pilot.
Local media, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the accident occurred just seconds after a Sukhoi Su-30 took off from Reggane Airbase in Adrar. The aircraft crashed a few kilometers east of the village of Timokten, north of Aoulef.
The specialized defense news website, Secrete Difa3, reported that the incident happened at a critical moment during takeoff, at a low altitude with full fuel tanks, leaving the pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Bakkouch Nasr, with little chance to react.
The second crew member managed to escape safely, said the report.
This marks the second Sukhoi Su-30 crash in Algeria, following an accident in Oum El Bouaghi province in January 2020, which claimed two lives.
An immediate investigation has been initiated to determine the causes and circumstances of the crash.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has extended his condolences to the victim's family. Enditem
