CANBERRA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Australia's population increased by 1.8 percent over the 12 months ending on Sept. 30, 2024, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday.

As of Sept. 30, Australia's population reached 27.3 million, an increase of 484,000 people compared to the same period in 2023, said Beidar Cho, ABS head of demography.

In the year leading up to Sept. 30, 2024, 617,900 people arrived from overseas, while 238,100 departed, which resulted in a net gain of 379,800 people through overseas migration, continuing a recent downward trend, Cho said.

Natural increase, which is births minus deaths, contributed 104,200 people, a 3-percent decline from the previous year. In the year leading up to the end of September, 291,200 births and 187,000 deaths were recorded, she said.

Western Australia experienced the fastest population growth over the past year, increasing by 2.5 percent.

Victoria followed with a 2.1-percent rise, while Queensland's population grew by 2 percent, Cho said, adding the island state of Tasmania saw the least growth over the 12-month period, with a 0.3-percent rise in population. Enditem
