Number of marriages in S. Korea grows 14.8 pct in 2024

SEOUL, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of marriages in South Korea grew 14.8 percent over the year to 222,400 in 2024, statistical office data showed Thursday.

It has marked the highest in five years since 2019, keeping an upward trend for the second consecutive year, according to Statistics Korea.

The number of international marriages between South Koreans and foreign spouses expanded 5.3 percent to 20,800 last year, continuing to rise for the third straight year.

The multicultural marriages accounted for 9.3 percent of the total marriages here in 2024, down from 10.2 percent in the previous year.

Of the foreign wives, Vietnamese women took up the largest share of 32.1 percent, followed by Chinese women at 16.7 percent and Thai women at 13.7 percent.

Among foreign husbands, the U.S. men made up the highest share of 28.8 percent, trailed by Chinese men at 17.6 percent and Vietnamese men at 15.0 percent.

The number of divorces shrank 1.3 percent from a year earlier to 91,200 in 2024, keeping a downward trend for the fifth successive year.
