COLOMBO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Hambantota International Port (HIP) successfully discharged the second batch of vehicles for the domestic market last week, the HIP Group (HIPG) said in a statement on Thursday.

A total of 1,159 vehicles were handled, including 462 BYD vehicles designated for the Sri Lankan market, the HIPG said.

The overall operation entailed the discharge of 490 vehicles and 669 vehicles loaded for transshipment, according to the HIPG.

The port was rapidly emerging as a crucial hub in the regional automotive supply chain, especially in the fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market, Lance Zuo, general manager of Commercial and Marketing at HIPG, said.

Additionally, the port is equipped with specialized towing equipment, ensuring that various forms of EV cargo are managed with the highest level of care and precision, Zuo said.

The port remains committed to enhancing its capacity and efficiency to facilitate seamless vehicle handling, further positioning itself as a premier hub for automotive logistics in South Asia, the HIPG said. Enditem
