JAKARTA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- To anticipate the increase in electric vehicle (EV) usage during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the Indonesian government has expanded the number of public EV charging stations by 7.5 times in the highest-occupancy areas along homecoming routes across Sumatra and Java.

"The government has predicted a fivefold increase in EV users during this year's Eid al-Fitr homecoming period. Therefore, we have instructed state-owned electricity company PLN to ensure the availability of charging station units," Indonesian Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said on Thursday.

He said that PLN had prepared a total of 3,558 charging stations across Indonesia, which have been technically adjusted to accommodate various types of chargers from different EV manufacturers in the country.

"So, in terms of technical readiness, the stations have already been adjusted to the existing EV standards," he said.

Previously, PLN's director of retail and commerce, Edi Srimulyanti, said that the use of electric cars for homecoming trips in Indonesia this year was expected to increase by up to 500 percent. Last year, 4,314 EVs were used for homecoming trips, while this year, the number is projected to rise to 21,570. Enditem
