LUSAKA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Thursday confirmed its first mpox-related death as the cumulative number of laboratory-confirmed infections reached 31 in the southern African nation.
Minister of Health Elijah Muchima said the first mpox-related death, involving an eight-month-old infant, was recorded at a health facility in Lusaka, the country's capital.
"A comprehensive review meeting was held to ascertain the cause of death, which was concluded to be complicated pneumonia in a known mpox patient," he said during a press briefing.
He said that the country recorded seven new mpox cases in the past week, three from the Copperbelt Province, two from the northern part of the country, and two from Lusaka, bringing the total number of cases to 31.
In October last year, Zambia reported its first mpox case. Enditem
