TRIPOLI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan Illegal Migration Control Department on Thursday announced that it has deported 191 migrants to their countries of origin.
Among them are 188 migrants of Bangladeshi nationality and three others of Syrian nationality, the department said in a statement published on its official Facebook page.
Their deportation was carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday in coordination with the International Organization for Migration, it added.
Libya has been a major transit point for migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, particularly since the country descended into chaos following the 2011 overthrow of its late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
On Monday, Libyan Interior Minister Emad al-Tarabelsi urged the European Union (EU) and countries affected by migration flows from Libya to provide more support in curbing illegal migration.
He said securing Libya's southern borders is key to addressing the issue, rather than focusing solely on coastal monitoring, as emphasized by the EU.
Al-Tarabelsi also called for development projects in migrants' countries of origin to address the root causes of migration. Enditem
