ALGIERS, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Algerian forces killed two foreign militants during a military operation in the country's far south near the borders with Mali and Niger, the Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The operation took place on Friday in the In Guezzam region, within Algeria's 6th Military Region, as part of efforts to combat terrorism and secure the country's borders, the ministry said in a statement.

The statement said that the two militants had crossed into Algeria illegally but did not disclose their nationalities. Troops seized a sniper rifle, three ammunition magazines, a large quantity of ammunition, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle during the raid.

"This operation is part of a series of successful security efforts, underscoring the army's vigilance and commitment to protecting Algeria's borders from infiltration," the ministry said.

The operation comes days after four militants surrendered to authorities near the Malian border.

Algeria has deployed tens of thousands of troops along its southern and eastern borders to prevent the infiltration of militants and weapons amid ongoing instability in Mali, Niger, and Libya. Enditem
