TOKYO, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks fell on Monday as the market was weighed down by uncertainty over U.S. trade policies.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, closed at 37,608.49, down 68.57 points, or 0.18 percent from the previous day.

The Nikkei at one point saw gains as individual investors sought dividends, and the recent rise in U.S. stocks also provided support.

However, concerns over potential changes in U.S. tariff policies kept investors cautious.

The semiconductor sector's sluggish performance also dampened momentum, limiting the Nikkei's upward trend beyond 38,000 points.

The broader TOPIX index fell for the first time in eight sessions, closing down 13.28 points, or 0.47 percent at 2,790.88.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, 1,105 stocks declined, 476 rose, and 56 remained unchanged. Enditem
