BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's population in 2024 stood at 455,500, up by 1.1 percent, compared to 450,500 in 2023, the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics at the Ministry of Finance and Economy said in a statement on Sunday.
Of the population, 240,700 people (52.8 percent) were male and 214,800 (47.2 percent) were female. 346,500 people (76.1 percent) were Brunei citizens while another 26,300 people (5.8 percent) were permanent residents and 82,700 people (18.1 percent) were temporary residents.
Regarding the age distribution, 331,700 (72.8 percent) of the population were aged between 15-64 years old, while 90,700 (19.9 percent) were below 15 years old. 33,100 people (7.3 percent) were aged 65 years old and above. The median age in 2024 was 32.4 years compared to 32.5 years in 2023.
Malays were the majority of the population, accounting for 335,500 people (73.7 percent) of the total population. Chinese and other racial groups numbered 43,800 people (9.6 percent) and 76,200 (16.7 percent) of the total population, respectively. Enditem
