BUDAPEST, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Hungary will not support Ukraine's rapid accession to the European Union (EU) ahead of Western Balkan countries, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Budapest with his North Macedonian counterpart Timco Mucunski, Szijjarto said, "I want to make it clear that there can be no question of Ukraine joining the EU before the Western Balkans."
He argued that the EU would benefit economically and strategically from Western Balkan integration.
Szijjarto criticised what he described as "enormous pressure" from Brussels to fast-track Kiev's membership; he pointed to what he called a "double standard" in EU enlargement policy, noting that North Macedonia has remained a candidate for two decades. Enditem
