WELLINGTON, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off southern New Zealand on Tuesday, though no tsunami warning was issued for the region.
According to GeoNet, New Zealand's geological hazard monitoring system, the quake occurred at 2:43 p.m. local time (9:43 a.m. Beijing time) and was centered 155 km northwest of the Snares Islands at a depth of 12 kilometers.
The U.S. Geological Survey initially recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.
