LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Police have discovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, including nearly a dozen assault rifles, during a series of operations in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, provincial police spokesman Mullah Ezatullah Haqqani said Tuesday.

The weaponry, which includes 10 pieces of AK-47, 20 pieces of pistols, hundreds of projectiles, and other military types of equipment, have been discovered and collected from the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and some districts over the past three months, the official said, adding all the weaponry was handed over to the concerned body.

Police have also arrested 50 individuals on charges of involvement in criminal activities such as murder, robbery and theft, the official added, saying police won't allow anyone to keep or carry arms illegally.

As part of efforts to ensure lasting peace and security in war-torn Afghanistan, the Afghan interim government has vowed to collect arms and ammunition from anyone living outside the security apparatus in the country. Enditem
