MAPUTO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 22 people were killed in a road accident on Monday afternoon in the Cafumpe area of the Gondola District in Mozambique's central province of Manica, local media reported on Tuesday.

The accident involved a passenger car and a long-haul truck. Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions.

Nineteen people died at the scene, and one victim succumbed to injuries at the Chimoio Provincial Hospital (HPC) hours later, bringing the death toll to 20.

Juvenal Chitovele, clinical director of the HPC, told Mozambique's state news agency AIM on Tuesday that two other victims who were in critical condition died overnight in the intensive care unit.

According to police in Manica, excessive speed and disregard for basic traffic rules were the main causes of the accident. Enditem
