ALMATY, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan has developed a national standard for ecotourism, set to take effect on June 1 this year, Kazinform news agency reported on Tuesday.

The document was created under the United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN). It outlines general and additional requirements for various tourism services, drawing on recommendations from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), international sustainable tourism certification systems, and ecotourism criteria adopted in countries like Slovenia, Malta, and Botswana.

"The national standard establishes clear requirements to minimize tourism's environmental impact," UNDP representatives stated. "This ensures Kazakhstan's unique ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural landscapes remain protected, allowing visitors to enjoy the country's beauty sustainably. The document addresses key issues, including ecotour classification, route planning, energy conservation, waste management, and biodiversity preservation."

The standard was reviewed in consultations with government agencies overseeing tourism, environmental protection, and health, as well as industry stakeholders such as tour operators, guides, guesthouse owners, and national park representatives.

UNDP clarified that potential users include "tour operators, travel agencies, accommodation providers, food service businesses, guides, tourism instructors, excursion organizers, and providers of information and advertising services."

The organization noted that the standard is expected to bolster Kazakhstan's reputation as an environmentally responsible travel destination aligned with global sustainable development standards. Enditem
