LILONGWE, March 25 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has equipped Malawi Police Service (MPS) with advanced forensic and ICT equipment worth 100,000 U.S. dollars to enhance public safety in Malawi ahead of the Sept. 16 election.
UNDP Resident Representative Fenella Frost made the donation on Monday at the MPS Headquarters in the capital, Lilongwe, describing the gesture as a "significant investment of UNDP in the future of law enforcement in Malawi."
Frost added that the forensic equipment, which will be used for document examination, is crucial for the integrity of legal processes in enhancing effectiveness of investigations without subjecting suspected victims to human rights abuse.
She also said the ICT equipment would enable the law enforcing agency to combat cybercrimes through better communication and data management during the election period.
In an interview with Xinhua after receiving the equipment, the MPS commissioner responsible for research and planning, Denis Chipao, applauded UNDP for its support to MPS, saying the donation "is critical in dealing with crimes that are committed using technology."
Chipao added that the equipment would, among other things, help combat cases of misinformation and cyberbullying, which he said are common vices during election period. Enditem
