TOKYO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The Kyoto City Council has passed and enacted an amendment to the accommodation tax ordinance to raise the tax imposed on hotel and ryokan guests.

The highest tax bracket will now be 10,000 yen (about 66.5 U.S. dollars) per night for stays priced at 100,000 yen or more per night.

The city plans to apply the new tax rates starting March 1, 2026.

Previously, the highest tax rate was 1,000 yen, applied to stays of 50,000 yen or more per night.

With the revision, Kyoto city expects annual accommodation tax revenue to increase significantly to approximately 12.6 billion yen (83.7 million dollars), compared to 5.2 billion yen (34.5 million dollars) in fiscal year 2023. Enditem
