HARARE, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Tuesday that Kirsty Coventry's election as International Olympic Committee (IOC) president demonstrates Africa's readiness to lead in global sports.

Speaking at a State House banquet honoring Coventry in the capital on Tuesday night, Mnangagwa emphasized sport's power to unite humanity through shared vision and purpose.

"The victory of Honorable Coventry is, thus, not only a source of inspiration and pride for Zimbabwe but for the SADC region and Africa as a whole," said Mnangagwa.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) comprises 16 southern African nations working toward regional socio-economic and political cooperation.

Coventry, a decorated Olympian, made history on March 20 by becoming both the first African and first female IOC president in the organization's 129-year history. She previously served as Zimbabwe's sports minister from September 2018 until her IOC election.

Mnangagwa urged Coventry to champion opportunities for young athletes across Africa and the developing world.

"You are not only our national treasure, but a treasure to all young athletes across Africa and the developing world. We believe in you and are confident that under your stewardship, the Olympic movement will continue to grow, fostering a spirit of excellence, fair play, inclusion, and unity among all nations of the world," added Mnangagwa.
