MAPUTO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The first ordinary session of the 10th legislature of Mozambique opened on Wednesday.

The session of the Assembly of the Republic will run through May 13, and lawmakers will review 26 key topics related to national development strategy and fiscal budget, according to daily newspaper Jornal Noticias.

Main items on the agenda include the government's 2025-2029 Five-Year Plan and a draft law on the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget for 2025.

The session will also deliberate on the 2025-2044 National Development Strategy, the General Prosecutor's Annual Report, and the 2023 General State Accounts.

The election of members to the National Council and revisions to the parliamentary organizational laws and procedural regulations are also among the topics for discussion.

President of Assembly Margarida Talapa opened the session. She was joined by parliamentary leaders from the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and opposition parties -- the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), and the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos).

In her opening speech, Talapa highlighted the complexity of the electoral process in the country and stressed the need for an electoral law that responds to a political compromise that "creates tolerance and mutual respect, for national dialogue."

According to the session schedule, on March 27-28, lawmakers will participate in an induction and adaptation seminar to familiarize themselves with legislative procedures and parliamentary rules.

The parliament will reconvene for a plenary session on April 9-10 to discuss information provided by the government as requested by legislators.

Furthermore, the assembly will debate and vote on issues such as the election of members of the National Defense and Security Council, the approval of appointments for the president of the Administrative Court and the vice president of the Supreme Court, the appointment of a judge-counselor to the Constitutional Council, and the approval of the 2025 parliamentary work plan and budget.
