DAR ES SALAAM, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank announced a new investment on Wednesday to enhance mobility and accessibility in Tanzania's capital, Dodoma.
According to a statement issued by the global lender, the funding is expected to create over 10,000 new jobs by 2030, while boosting the city's economic output by 2 percent.
The 200-million-U.S.-dollar Dodoma Integrated and Sustainable Transport project, approved by the World Bank Board of Executive Directors, will benefit more than 430,000 residents, over half of the city's population.
The statement said the investment, financed by the World Bank's International Development Association, will improve urban mobility by upgrading selected corridors, creating resilient access routes, improving the central business district, and enhancing walking and cycling infrastructure.
"Dodoma's rapid expansion since 2016 presents opportunities and challenges," said Nathan Belete, World Bank division director for Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
"As the city grows, ensuring access to safe and efficient transport is critical to sustaining its economic momentum and improving the quality of life for its residents. This project will help Dodoma grow sustainably, ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with the city's ambitions," Belete added. Enditem
