COLOMBO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 57 individuals involved in various illegal fishing activities during search operations conducted between March 8 and 20, according to a statement issued by the navy on Wednesday.

The navy said the suspects were taken into custody for engaging in unlawful practices such as unauthorized harvesting of sea cucumbers and using banned fishing methods.

The arrests were made in the waters off Sri Lanka's northern and eastern coasts, the statement added.

The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated fishing gear, vehicles, and vessels, were handed over to fisheries officials in Northern and Eastern provinces for further action, the navy said. Enditem
