LUANDA, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio said Wednesday that the presidents of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have agreed to maintain regular consultations on the conflict in eastern DRC, despite Angola stepping down as a mediator.

Antonio told media that visiting DRC President Felix Tshisekedi met with Angolan President Joao Lourenco here on Wednesday, with the two leaders reaffirming the "good relations" between their countries and peoples.

He added that the decision to continue regular consultations aligns with Angola's responsibilities as the current chair of the African Union.

On Monday, Angola announced its withdrawal from a mediator role in the eastern DRC conflict. This followed the cancellation of planned direct dialogues between the DRC government and the March 23 Movement rebels.

Leaders from eastern and southern Africa have appointed five former presidents to an expanded panel of facilitators to help advance the peace process in eastern DRC. Enditem
