ALGIERS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Algerian forces killed two "terrorists" during a military operation in the country's far south near the borders with Mali and Niger, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.
During the operation that took place in the In Guezzam region, within Algeria's 6th Military Region, as part of the efforts to combat terrorism and secure the country's borders, the forces recovered a sniper rifle, a significant quantity of ammunition, and other items, the ministry said in a statement.
From March 19 to Wednesday, five people suspected of supporting "terrorist groups" were arrested across Algeria, and five surrendered to Algerian forces in southwestern Algeria and handed over their rifles, the ministry said.
In a separate statement, the ministry said border guards in the 3rd Military Region have arrested four Moroccan nationals attempting to smuggle 106 kg of processed cannabis into Algeria through the western border.
Algeria has deployed tens of thousands of troops along its southern and eastern borders to prevent the infiltration of militants and weapons amid ongoing instability in Mali, Niger, and Libya. Enditem
