HARARE, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday swore in a new sports minister to succeed Kirsty Coventry, who resigned after being elected as the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Anselem Sanyatwe, the new minister of sports, recreation, arts and culture and former commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, took the oath of office at the State House in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare.
One of Africa's most successful Olympians, Coventry made history on March 20 by becoming the first African and first female IOC president. She previously served as Zimbabwe's sports minister from September 2018 until her IOC election.
On Tuesday night, Mnangagwa held a state banquet to honor Coventry on her historic election, hailing her as Africa's pride and urging her to champion opportunities for young athletes across Africa and the developing world. Enditem
