NAIROBI, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's electricity consumption increased in the last six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, the energy regulator said on Thursday.

Daniel Kiptoo, director-general of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), told journalists in Nairobi, Kenya's capital, that electricity utilization rose by 6.13 percent, reaching 7,222.37 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

"This growth was driven by rising demand from organic load growth and an expanding customer base," Kiptoo said.

He said that geothermal remained the leading source of electrical energy in the country, accounting for 39.81 percent of total generation during the review period, down from 44.55 percent in the same period last year due to the shutdown of the 45-megawatt (MW) Olkaria I power plant for rehabilitation.

According to the energy regulator, hydro generation ranked as the second-largest source of electrical energy supplied to the national grid, while wind generation contributed 13.46 percent of the total energy produced.

Kiptoo said electricity imports accounted for 10.41 percent of total electrical energy in the second half of 2024, up from 6.16 percent in the same period of the previous financial year, due to the full commercial operations of electricity imports from Ethiopia.

He said that peak demand during the review period reached 2,288.35 MW in October 2024, marking an increase of 117.79 MW from the 2,170.56 MW recorded in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Enditem
