CAIRO, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Friday condemned Israeli airstrikes earlier in the day targeting the Lebanese capital Beirut.

During a phone conversation with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's rejection of any actions that will undermine the security, safety, and stability of the Lebanese people, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Abdelatty also stressed the need for full implementation of and adherence to the cessation of hostilities agreement in southern Lebanon, and the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, read the statement.

He also called for enabling the Lebanese army to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, highlighting the importance of full and simultaneous implementation of the resolution by all parties.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt's deep concern over the dangerous escalation in Lebanon, warning it could lead the region to slide into a dangerous confrontation that threatens regional security.

He said Egypt is making urgent contacts with regional and international parties to de-escalate the situation, urging the international community to assume responsibilities towards stopping repeated Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

Earlier on Friday, Israeli airstrikes hit a building in Beirut's southern suburbs, marking the first such attack since a ceasefire was agreed on Nov. 27 between Israel and Lebanon.

The Israeli military said it targeted a "drone storage facility" belonging to Hezbollah in Dahieh, a stronghold for the Shiite militant group near the Lebanese capital.

There is no immediate report of casualties.

Earlier in the day, rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel, including the town of Kiryat Shmona. A senior Hezbollah official told Lebanese broadcaster Al-Mayadeen that the group was not responsible for the rocket fire.

The November 2024 ceasefire ended over a year of border clashes linked to the Gaza war, but has been punctuated by sporadic violence. Israel maintains forces at five border positions, missing a February 2025 withdrawal deadline, and continues strikes it says are aimed at countering "Hezbollah threats." Hezbollah maintains it adheres to the truce and accuses Israel of fabricating pretexts for attacks. Enditem
