DHAKA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- With merely a day remaining for the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, millions of Bangladeshis are traveling to their hometowns in the largest annual holiday exodus by road, rail and waterways.

Since Saturday morning, traffic has begun to build up on major roads out of Dhaka. Many residents have started their journey home days earlier to avoid the mad rush. The long-distance bus stations, ferry terminals, and train stations were seen overflowing with tens of thousands of Eid holidaymakers.

Residents who had their own cars or hired vehicles were making their last-minute shopping and business transactions before their long road trip home.

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan, will be celebrated in Bangladesh on or around March 31 based on the sighting of the new moon.

The hustling and bustling Dhaka is now showing signs of tranquility as people, with or even without seat-ensuring tickets, are gathering at the city's terminals and stations to join relatives in their village homes.

Homegoers are reportedly reaching their destinations for Eid al-Fitr this time with no hassle as the Bangladeshi interim government has declared an additional holiday through an executive order.

To make travel easy, state-owned transport bodies have started special Eid services to ply on different inter-district routes in addition to the regular services to meet the demand of the home-bound city dwellers. Officials said additional forces have been deployed in Dhaka streets. Enditem
