KABUL, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The counter-narcotics police have discovered a huge quantity of illicit drugs in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, provincial police spokesman Mullah Asadullah Jamshid said Saturday.

The contraband, which includes 200 kg hashish, 40 kg opium poppy, and other raw materials used in manufacturing heroin, was discovered during a series of recent operations in parts of the province, the official said.

Police also destroyed eight acres of hashish farm recently, the official added.

The Afghan interim government, which has banned poppy cultivation, processing of drugs, and drug trafficking, has vowed to fight the menace until the once-poppy-growing country becomes a drug-free nation. Enditem
