KABUL, March 29 (Xinhua) -- A total of 223 Afghan inmates imprisoned in Pakistan have been set free and returned to their homeland, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, the detainees returned to Afghanistan within the past two days through the Torkham border crossing point in eastern Nangarhar, and the Spin Boldak crossing point in southern Kandahar province.

Pakistan has set free thousands of jailed Afghans and sent them back to Afghanistan over the past year.

More than two million Afghans reportedly have been living in Pakistan. Pakistani authorities have asked Afghans without legal travel documents and resident permits to leave the country. Enditem
