YANGON -- A total of 1,644 people died, 3,408 were injured, and 139 remained missing in a powerful earthquake in Myanmar, according to the Information Team of the State Administration Council on Saturday night.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the southeast Asian country on Friday, with Mandalay, Bago, Magway, the northeastern Shan state, Sagaing, and Nay Pyi Taw among the hardest-hit regions. (Myanmar-Quake-Casualties)

ISTANBUL -- At least one worker was killed and four others injured in an explosion on Saturday at a chemical factory in Türkiye's western province of Izmir, local media reported.

According to the state-run Anadolu agency, the incident occurred in the morning at a factory in the organized industrial zone of the Aliaga district. The agency stated that the explosion was caused by gas compression, which also sparked a fire. (Turkiye-Explosion-Casualties)

NEW DELHI -- At least 16 Naxals were killed and two policemen wounded Saturday in a fierce gunfight in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said.

KAMPALA -- The cumulative number of confirmed mpox cases in Uganda has reached 4,810, with 37 deaths reported since the outbreak was declared in the East African country eight months ago, according to the Ugandan Ministry of Health.
