COLOMBO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Sunday launched the first phase of the Urban Forest Project near the Kelaniya Bridge in Peliyagoda, a suburb of Colombo, the President's Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.
As part of the initiative, trees were planted on state-owned land, transforming the area into an attractive urban forest plantation, the statement said.
The protection and maintenance of planted trees have been assigned to various groups, such as school students, university students, and those in religious schools, it said.
A mobile application was also introduced to continuously monitor and update the growth and condition of the trees, as well as to track the progress of their respective caretakers, it added.
Earlier this month, PMD said that with the rising urban population, cities face significant environmental challenges such as air, soil, and water pollution. The project was launched to address these concerns. Enditem
