BERLIN, March 30 (Xinhua) -- RB Leipzig has appointed Zsolt Low as head coach until the end of the season, following the sacking of Marco Rose on Sunday.
The decision follows Leipzig's 1-0 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach, a result that saw it slip to sixth in the Bundesliga and further jeopardize its hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
With just three wins from its last 11 matches, the club's management has opted for a change.
Low will take charge of his first training session on Monday, ahead of Leipzig's German Cup semifinal against VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.
The Hungarian will be assisted by Peter Krawietz, a former long-time colleague of ex-Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. They will be tasked with saving the season by securing a top-four finish and a place in the German Cup final in Berlin.
"Zsolt Low has everything we need to turn things around quickly and improve our performances. He brings experience, success with top clubs and the right energy. Now it's up to the team to respond with him," said sporting director Marcel Schaefer.
The Budapest-born coach is no stranger to Leipzig. He served as assistant coach under Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhuttl between 2015 and 2018, helping the club win promotion and establish itself in the Bundesliga.
His coaching resume also includes serving as assistant to Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, where he won league titles in Germany and France, and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2021.
"We are fully focused on the remaining nine games of the season," said Low. "We have the chance to reach the Cup final and qualify for the Champions League, and we will give everything to make that happen."
The 45-year-old former defender, with his Bundesliga experience at Mainz, Hoffenheim and Energie Cottbus, was most recently head of football development at Red Bull's global football network. His return to Leipzig will be his first as head coach. Enditem
