LUSAKA, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's central bank on Monday launched new banknotes and coins, which the government said marks another step in the evolution of the country's currency.
The new banknote and coin family consists of six banknotes and six coins.
Situmbeko Musokotwane, minister of finance and national planning, said at the launching event in the Zambian capital of Lusaka that the new banknotes and coins reflect the country's deep connection to the land, and celebrate the unique flora and fauna that flourish as well as the awe-inspiring waterfalls that showcase the natural beauty of the country.
He said the new family of banknotes and coins also depicts the country's key economic sectors and challenges the government to take bold steps forward to re-ignite economic progress and build a more stable and prosperous future.
"The new currency family is, therefore, more than just a medium of exchange; it is a celebration of our heritage, culture, and unity as the people of Zambia. The plants, waterfalls, and animals featured in the new currency series also serve as powerful reminders of our collective responsibility to protect the environment for future generations," he said.
He also said the government has not lost sight of implementing measures to reduce cash transactions and move toward the utilization of digital platforms.
The new banknotes and coins will circulate alongside the old ones for one year from the date of launch. Enditem
