CAIRO, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed on Tuesday developments in the Middle East.
During a phone conversation, the two presidents discussed mediation efforts to restore calm to the region. This, they noted, would have positive effects on navigation in the Red Sea and help prevent economic losses for all parties involved, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency.
The two presidents also exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral relations, emphasizing the depth and strength of their ties.
They stressed their keenness to continue the cooperation in a way that achieves the common interests of the two peoples.
The U.S. military has resumed airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in northern Yemen since March 15 in a bid to deter the group from attacking Israeli targets, the U.S. Navy, and international shipping lanes in the region.
But the Houthi group kept its attacks on Israeli targets and U.S. military vessels in the Red Sea after Israel ended the ceasefire with Hamas and restarted military operations in Gaza.
Earlier in March, the Egyptian president said that the monthly losses of the Suez Canal revenues reached around 800 million U.S. dollars due to the regional "situation." Enditem
