DAMASCUS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Syria experienced a nationwide power outage Tuesday evening due to a technical malfunction in the country's electrical system, according to the General Electricity Transmission and Distribution Corporation.
Khaled Abu Dai, director general of the General Establishment for Electricity Transmission and Distribution, told the state-run SANA news agency that a technical fault in the national grid led to a complete blackout, adding that repair efforts are underway to restore electricity as quickly as possible.
According to local monitoring group Sawt al-Asima (Voice of the Capital), the disruption originated in the southern region of the country after a failure in high-voltage lines caused a shock to the power grid, leading turbines at power stations serving southern Syria to shut down.
The disturbance created additional strain across the network, prompting further malfunctions in central and northern Syria. As a result, turbines at Aleppo's power plant went offline, pushing much of the country into darkness.
Sawt al-Asima said repairs could take several hours and warned that restarting stations and their turbines might extend into the early morning hours or beyond. Enditem
