ANKARA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 23 others injured after a passenger bus flipped over in the central Sivas province of Türkiye on Wednesday, according to local authorities.
The bus was traveling from northwestern Yalova province to eastern Erzincan province and overturned near the entrance of the Imranli district on the Sivas-Erzincan highway, the Sivas governorship said in a statement.
According to the statement, the driver of the bus lost control of the steering, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Emergency teams, including police, gendarmerie, the disaster agency, and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene following reports of the accident.
The bus was carrying 27 people, including three crew members. Two passengers lost their lives at the scene, while 23 others sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have launched a judicial investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Traffic accidents have claimed 2,713 lives across Türkiye in 2024, according to the General Directorate of Security. The highest number of accidents occurred in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, with Istanbul alone recording 97,354 incidents.
