SOFIA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian authorities have seized 34.207 kg of cocaine at Danube Bridge near Vidin at the border with Romania, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said on Wednesday.

The illicit drug, split into 30 packets, was discovered on Monday evening, hidden in secret compartments under the floor of a cargo van when it attempted to enter Bulgaria, the NCA said in a press release.

The vehicle, driven by a 37-year-old Bulgarian citizen, was traveling from Italy to Bulgaria, the NCA said.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.

The NCA also said that the inspection of the vehicle was part of the compensatory measures carried out by Bulgarian authorities after the abolition of border control at the internal borders of the European Union following the full admission of the country as a member of the Schengen Area on Jan. 1 this year.
