COLOMBO, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has pledged 1 million U.S. dollars in aid to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that struck the country last week, a press release from the Department of Government Information said on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers took this decision, emphasizing the historic and spiritual ties between the two predominantly Buddhist nations, according to the press release.

In addition to the financial assistance, Sri Lanka will also send dry rations collected under the guidance of Buddhist monks, and these will be transported to Myanmar with the support of the government, the press release said.

Furthermore, a medical relief team comprising doctors and healthcare personnel has been placed on standby for immediate deployment to Myanmar should the need arise, the press release said. Enditem
