ADDIS ABABA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia has successfully surpassed its ambitious goal of planting more than 40 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Tuesday.

"This significant milestone underscores Ethiopia's commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of future generations," the state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation quoted the prime minister as saying.

Abiy said that this endeavor is not merely a task but a substantial investment in the nation's ecological future, showcasing Ethiopia's dedication to proactive climate action.

Amid growing global climate concerns, he said Ethiopia's efforts could serve as an inspiration for similar initiatives worldwide.

"By covering our land with green plants, we not only fight climate change but also create a more visually appealing environment," he said.

Urging continued public participation, Abiy announced plans to plant an additional 10 billion seedlings over the next two years.

Launched in 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative aims to combat deforestation, restore degraded landscapes, and enhance environmental resilience. The Ethiopian Forestry Development recently revealed plans to plant 7.5 billion seedlings during the upcoming rainy season from June to September.

The Ethiopian government has also submitted a request to Guinness World Records to recognize the initiative's large-scale tree-planting efforts, which engage millions of Ethiopians each year. Enditem
