ADDIS ABABA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia earned more than 360 million U.S. dollars from the export of horticultural commodities during the first eight months of the current fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Ethiopian Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente addressed the opening ceremony of the International Floriculture and Horticulture Trade Fair on Tuesday in Addis Ababa, the country's capital.
Amente said the East African country generated about 366 million dollars from exporting horticultural commodities to the international market during the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2024/2025, which started on July 8, 2024, the state-run Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported.
Noting that flower exports secured the largest share of the total revenue generated from the export of horticultural commodities during the reported period, the agriculture minister stressed that the Ethiopian government is working hard to harness the horticulture sector's "immense potential" to boost hard currency earnings and create jobs for the country's burgeoning youth.
According to recent data from the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Britain represent the top three destinations for Ethiopia's flower exports, while the top three vegetable export destinations are Somalia, Djibouti, and the Netherlands.
Statistics from the ministry also show that Ethiopia earned over 3.84 billion dollars from the export of goods during the first seven months of the current fiscal year, registering 146 percent of the initial target. Key export commodities such as gold, coffee, oilseeds, electricity, and livestock have exceeded their revenue expectations. Enditem
